I just love this book. I just moved into a new house and as I always do, I am planting fruit trees. BUT...... this book has given me such great information. It is a bit scary. I went out and chopped all my poor trees practically down to nubs. Believe me it was hard to do. But it makes so much sense. Some of the trees I have planted in the past have gotten out of control and fruit at the top just rots. I can't wait until spring to see what happens now. I am somewhat worried about a few of the trees that were in their second winter and I am hoping I wasn't too late to make the changes. As I look at the bare trunks I think I did a pretty good job. I am also excited to start fertilizing and taking care of my "Little Trees" by the book.

The author shares a lot of important information in an easy to digest discussion and does a good job convincing the reader it is ok to prune more harshly than most novices would be comfortable with for the long term good of the trees. She also does a nice job explaining, with pictures, the types of cuts, when to use them and the impact of pruning timing on growth. I would also like to mention that the author is most familiar with semi-arid California fruit tree species so if you live in a similar region, it will be especially helpful but if you live in a very different region, like New England, there are still many good pieces of information but the more specific species info is not as useful. Though I found this to be a minor footnote and overall found the book a nice pruning resource that I will definitely refer to over and over.

There are many reviews on this book, Grow a Little Fruit Tree: Simple Pruning Techniques for Small-Spaces. I want to emphasize that it is good for larger trees and larger areas also. It has the added advantage of knowing "when" to prune. The author had to persist in her findings, her style of pruning, for years before the "experts" could begin to see the value of what she was teaching. I bought this book also for gifts, it seemed that useful to me. It is also very viewable, in a good size and good quality paper. I thought it quite worthwhile.

This book is Simple and down to earth. Ann Ralph is very personable, and immediately builds the reader's confidence that he or she can make the Little Fruit Trees work in a small yard. The illustrations are beautiful, and her instructions are very clear and precise. Wish she was my next door neighbor, and could critique my progress. I am 71 years of age, and planting a new "grow my own food yard" and this totally makes sense, I'm so happy I found this book!

This is a great little book on how to grow little fruit trees. I learned so much. It is about much more than just pruning, You will learn how to select fruit trees, when and how to plant them, how to grow them and harvest them. There are more advanced, detailed books out there about growing fruit trees, but this is a wonderful place to start. You need to learn the basics first and this book covers them. In fact, if you are a weekend gardener with a busy life, you could get by growing fruit trees with just this book and you would do a pretty good job. On the other hand, if you want to dig deeper, you can buy a few other books that cover topics and fruits that you want to learn more about. I really enjoyed it and recommend it. Fun to read! I loved it!

Pretty good introduction to basic home orchard skills. This little book is an easy read, has some nice pictures and inspiring ideas. It won't make you a master gardener, but it will certainly help give you some practical methods of planting and caring for your own orchard, even if you have space constraints. On the negative side, I felt like some of the book felt basic and repetitive. I wish there had been a bit more detailed information about maintenance and care of your fruit trees after they've been in the ground for a couple of years. I also would have enjoyed FAR more pictures demonstrating the small tree pruning techniques and its results. I feel this would have given me some more inspiration and knowledge to plan and tackle good summer pruning of my own little trees.

Easy to read, packed with advice, and rich with "can do" approach. Enjoy your fruit trees more as you make them more manageable to care for. Especially liked emphasis on keeping the trees pruned so light and air flow can come down through the center of the trees. This stimulates growth, decreases insect damage, and stimulates healthy fruit production. Overgrown trees make harvesting difficult and produce more fruit than you can use. It is better to have less fruit and eat it while at its peak in flavor. Large trees make pruning not just difficult but dangerous. We are retired, started two years ago, and are enjoying delicious fruit already. Keeping trees small allows you to plant more trees in a small area so you can enjoy several kinds of fruit. It is also very exciting to add more trees and see your mini orchard come to life.

Where was this book when I needed it ? I planted my orchard about 10 years ago when I finally acquired a big enough property. Had this book existed when I started, I would have taken an entirely different approach. All the things she talks about in terms of managing the size of your trees and how much produce you can actually handle as a home gardener is so true. Now that I am older, my trees are bigger than I should have let them get, and their production is beyond my capacity to can, dehydrate, freeze, and give away; I am also less excited about climbing on ladders to get those last peaches and plums. There is a lot of common sense in this book, and it also gives you the courage to break out those pruning shears. In the future, with the little yard space I have left, I'm going to plant some more fruit trees and keep them under control this time. This is a very useful book for even experienced gardeners, and it is a gift to orchard lovers who are just starting out or to those think they don't have enough room for a few fruit trees.
