About the Author
Sylvan Runkel (1906–1995) is the coauthor of five books about midwestern wildflowers, including Wildflowers of the Iowa Woodlands and Wildflowers and Other Plants of Iowa Wetlands. A vigorous promoter of conservation for many years, he was honored by the dedication of the Sylvan Runkel State Preserve in 1996. Conservationist Dean Roosa has served as Iowa’s state ecologist, board member for the Iowa Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the Natural Areas Association, chair of the Iowa Natural History Association, and president of the Iowa Ornithologists' Union. He is the coauthor of The Vascular Plants of Iowa: An Annotated Checklist and Natural History (Iowa, 1994).

This book has fantastic photos and good information. I found it to not be as useful as I'd hoped though in identifying wild flowers on my hikes. Apparently I needed more info on weeds and tall grasses. Not a bad book at all, just not quite the right book for the plants I was looking for.
It has gorgeous pictures. The text is informative and very interesting. However, the organising principle is a mystery. I find it hard to look anything up in it. The index is helpful only if you know what something is called already.

I just love this book and would recommend it without hesitation. I find myself referring to it again and again. Anyone who loves the wildflowers of the prairie is sure to enjoy the in-depth information it contains.
Sylvan Runkel and Dean Roosa have given us a beautiful book on the wildflowers of the upper Midwest Tall Grass Prairie. The pictures of the flowers are beautiful and well done. They have been entirely replaced from the first edition, which I have not seen. This is an University of Iowa publication and as such centers on Iowa to a certain degree.The plants are well described, and their habitats explained. Some Native American uses of the plants are given. The botanical information is fairly complete, but not overly technical. In many cases name derivation is also given.One needs to note that the flowers are organized in their order of blooming through the seasons - Not by color, genus, or standard botanical order. Otherwise, as noted by a previous reviewer, the sequencing of the flowers would be a complete mystery as this is an unusual organization scheme.This is a beautiful and useful book for anyone interested in the flowers of the Tall Grass Prairie. It is a sad comment on modern farming that we are losing both our flora and or fauna due to ditch to ditch farming technics and the removal of weedy side areas by fields and the indiscriminate spraying for noxious specious.I would caution, as in any highly selected listing of flowers and plants that to take the identification down to specie, one should consult more complete and technical works such as Kaul's "Flora of Nebraska," or the "Flora of the Great Plains" and its companion Atlas of the Flora of the Great Plains" or "Gray's Manual of Botany," or Britton and Brown's "An Illustrated Flora of the Northern United States and Canada" for accurate identification, as there are in many cases similar species found in the area.
