This book had a lot of facts, but they were spewed out stream of consciousness style. There was not overarching theory or theme to the book. I was very interested in learning about Lebanon. However, the dry recitation of names and dates left me uninterested.
SUPER-WONDERFUL!!!!! A MUST HAVE!!!
An interesting read about the ethnic divides of modern day Lebanon. Lebanon experienced a Civil War in the 1970s to 1985. This caused the death of thousands of Druze, Maronite Christians, Sunni and Shiite Muslims. This also destablized the Middle East and caused Israel to intervene in Lebanon in 1982, in the 1990s, and 2006. One thing I disliked about this book is the map of the Middle East and the caption on the map of Israel saying Palestine. The author's disdain for the Israel state is very obvious. The reality is that Israel exists as a state and whether the author likes it or not--it is a reality. I appreciate his review of the attrocities that Israel soldiers committed on the citizens of Lebanon.I thought this a good read about the ethnic divisions in Lebanon. It shows that the state of Lebanon can destablilize the Middle East and cause wars with Israel and her Arab neighbors.
The author travels through Lebanon, talking to people from all backgrounds, religions, and political ideologies to create a revealing and hopeful portrait of a people who continue thrive amid chaos and violence. Wars come and go, treaties are made and broken, but the Lebanese persist, living their daily lives with a resilience and spirit that ensures not merely survival but an appreciation of life and a joie di vivre that can inspire all cultures and countries.
