It's an ok read. We have this as a textbook for a class I taught last term, so I bought myself an extra desk copy with this purchase. It does give a high level overview of the digital forensics field, but is written somewhat like a term paper. The author seems to have a hangup on a very uncomfortable criminal topic, too. There Is more to digital forensics than looking for underage illicit content. Every single chapter mentions it. Less common are topics like industrial espionage, cheating spouses, organized crime, and so forth. The first portion of the text has some good sidebars with real world examples. Towards the end they are rare. It's as though the author got tired of writing and wanted to get done, didn't feel like looking them up, or maybe the editors cut them out.Editing/proofreading is another thing. The book had spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. While not prevalent throughout, it is certainly enough to notice. This is not something I'd expect in anything designed as a textbook. Is it worth reading? For someone wanting a high level introduction, sure. I can't say I'd suggest paying as much as $20 for it, though. There are much better books available in the same price range or slightly higher which I will be recommending to my dean.
An excellent introductory book for those who have no experience in the field but remain interested in learning what it involves. So what makes this a 3-star product? It's the dreadful number of typos, missing punctuation, and the bloated margin widths that seem to serve no function other than to increase page count. The editing is so bad, the editors responsible should be terminated. They either have no command of the English language, they simply did not care, they did not actually read the manuscript before printing, or a combination of all three. Whatever the reason(s), they should be ashamed of themselves. Their performance, at least as far as this book is concerned, should be the source of embarrassment. It's too bad, too, as the author did a fine job of presenting otherwise technical subject matter in a prose that was easy to understand.
This is a very good book. I've been a forensic examiner for both the government and in private practice for the better part of a decade. I haven't seen too many basic texts that sum up the core of the field in an effective way that relates to beginners. The author on this has boiled things down into a very concise and relatively non-technical volume that is approachable. It's inevitable that when discussing forensics there will be some heavy duty technical concepts popping up, but this work rises above by not trying to be all things for everyone. It understands its role and target reader and executes on the plan exceedingly well.If you are interested in the basics of digital forensics without much fluff and with just the right balance of technical information, buy this book.
If you have found yourself wondering about digital forensics but not knowing where to start, then this is the book for you. This book is an "elevator pitch" introduction to digital forensics. The author does a great job of keeping each chapter easy to read and full of good information. The author does mention a few tools of the major tools but this is not a how-to type of book.If you have ever thought about forensics this book is a great place to start. The cases notes and Q&A's with other eximiners help to round out how this type of work applies to incident response and legal proceedings. If you have experience in this field you won't learn anything new from this book.
I dabble with forensics products at my job so I wanted a better understanding of the digital process. This book provided a great introduction on digital forensics and the processes it involves as well as the legal aspects of it.It is a quick and easy ready for someone with minimal exposure to digital forensics. If you have some background in that area this book won't provide anything new but everyone else can learn from it.
Used for a digital forensics class in a criminal justice degree. Digital forensics can be a bit challenging if you don't have a background in it, and this book, for the most part, makes understanding it as painless as possible. Sometimes it does get a bit too verbose so I gave it four stars, but not a bad textbook all things considered.
Just like the title says, this book is an overview of the basics of digital forensics. And as a primer, it does a great job of introducing not only the technical basics, but also some of the (just as important!) non-technical basics that entrants to the field should be aware of. Also, I love that this is not just Computer Forensics, but Digital Forensics. Networks and mobile devices are becoming a bigger part of what a typical digital forensic analyst encounters these days and they need some love too - and get it in Chapters 9 and 10.Like the title to my review says, I wish that this book had been around when I started in the field. The information is laid out in a easy to understand manner, and there is a good measure of humor thrown in to keep things fun. My favorite line so far? "A digital forensic report written in plain English is both much appreciated and much more effective (can I get an 'Amen' from the lawyers out there?)." Well, I'm not a lawyer, but you got at least one "amen" here.Bearing in mind that this book is geared toward newer entrants, I would love to see additional books that take the same approach and delve even deeper. All in all, I highly recommend this for those new or newer to the field. Great stuff!
What was expected arrived on time without issue. A bit more basic than I would have liked...but again it did say basic on the cover, so I am not surprised. The only reason for 4 stars is the product was just ok. Nothing phenomenal, with simplistic writing. If you know absolutley nothing about digital forensics, this will be a guide.
