About the Author
R. A. MONTGOMERY attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston-Northampton School and Williams College where he graduated in 1958. He pursued graduate studies in Religion and Economics at Yale and NYU. Montgomery was an adventurer all his life, climbing mountains in the Himalaya, skiing throughout Europe and scuba-diving wherever he could. His interested included education, macro-economics, geo-politics, mythology, history, mystery novels and music. He wrote his first interactive book, Journey Under the Sea, in 1976 and published it under the series name The Adventures of You. A few years later Bantam Books bought this book and gave Montgomery a contract for five more, to inaugurate their new children s publishing division. Bantam renamed the series Choose Your Own Adventure and a publishing phenomenon was born. The series has sold more than 260 million copies in over 40 languages. He was married to the writer Shannon Gilligan. Montgomery died in November 2014, only two months after his last book was published.

As a child of the 80s, I loved Choose Your Own Adventure books. Recently, something clicked in my head and I said "Hey! Do they still publish those books?" I looked online and, lo and behold, they do! Being the father of a young daughter, I really, really wanted to get one for her. So, I asked her: "Sweetie, if I got you a book where you could make the choices about how the story played out, would you want to read it?" She said "Huh?". I said, "Well, it's like you're the hero of the book and you get to choose what to do. The book will offer you a choice and you turn to a certain page, based on that choice". She said, "Oh, yeah! That sounds neat!". So, I ordered this book for her. Long story short, she loved it! She has read it many times now and I've had to order other titles in the series for her. It makes me glad because she's getting the same level of enjoyment from these books that I got from CYoA books when I was younger. I believe that your child will enjoy them, too, if they like to read and love to use their imagination.
I give it only 3 stars because even though it's an awesome book, the idea of interacting is awesome but having the same beginning gets old. My kids want to read it over and over but make me paraphrase the beginning. I wish there was a few different beginnings. Also, this book is for very young kids. My children are 7,8 and 9 years old and this book is for more like 4 to 7. I found that there is more of these books but they are rated for a bit older children. Also, my autistic son won't touch the book pages of normal books negate of texture issue and these books are high gloss pages.
My son grew up reading the original Choose Your Own Adventure, and wanted something similar to share with his four year old son. This book did the trick! My grandson somberly told me he had to make a big decision to choose between the red door, or the yellow door...and he chose the RED one! What a great way to instill the love of reading!
These are similar to the Twist-a-Plot books series. Our family loves anything haunted house/halloween themed so this book was right up our alley. I have an 8 year old and an 11 year old that both enjoy these books. Our 5 year old, although he can't read the books, loves to get in on choosing different endings. They can't wait to get to the bottom of a page to decide what to do next. As soon as they finish one senario, they immediately start over, making different choices to see how the story changes.Great books, easy read
My 4 y/o loves the Choose Your Own Adventure books and what a great concept to gear them towards a younger audience! The positives of this book are:easy vocabularyvery child friendly and not scary at allgiving the child control of the storycan breeze through all 12 endings fairly quickly without a ton of redundancyNegatives:grammatical structure sometimes seems awkwardendings are weak and unexcitingno educational incorporation as in the older child series of CYOAI really wish Montgomery would have taken the same style as in "The Abominable Snowman", "Journey Under the Sea", etc and added some educational value to the books and stronger, more incorporated endings... however, these are great for the 3 year old range and a bit beyond.
I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a kid (and they still have the same ones out there!), but those are really too long and complicated to be appropriate for a child under the age of about 8. This new series - the CYOA Dragonlarks - is fantastic for much younger children. My 4-year old has several of them and I read them to him. He thinks it's fantastic to be able to choose what will happen next, and each section of the book (between choices) is short and to the point so he doesn't lose interest. Even my 9-year old likes listening and reading them, although they are aimed at younger children. The Haunted House is clever part of this series - it looks a little scary, but isn't really at all, so my son can feel like he's being "edgy" without actually getting scared.
Really good for very young kids. It's simple and silly, there are a lot of choices for them to make, and it's short enough that rereading it isn't annoying. My 4-year-old loves it. I imagine it is too basic for kids over 6/7.
I was nostalgic when I purchased this. I have a hesitant reader who was anxious to read this type of book. I give it 5 stars for the level of interest my children expressed. These larger editions are for a slightly younger audience than the ones I read back in the 80s. The font is larger and the text is much easier to read. My first and fourth grader both enjoyed this.
